Eastbourne United Association 3 Town 2
Two defensive mix-ups and a hotly disputed penalty cost Town this match. In the opening minutes 2 town defenders were making a mess of clearing the ball under pressure from a United player. Ollie advanced from his goal to clear a weak attempted back-pass but missed his kick completely, and the United player gleefully prodded the ball home. Cleggy was booked shortly after, but made ammends by equalizing for Town. Unfortunately, his up and down match ended with him being stretchered off in the dying seconds of the game, having been brutally challenged by the United no. 15. How that guy remained on the pitch was a mystery to tthe Town team, bench, and supporters - the ref was definitely a "homer" - booking Town players for petty offences, but allowing United to get away totally unpunished with similar
A social event in the clubhouse finished soon after half-time which added considerably to United support; in the first half, the Town supporters had outnumbered United by about 25 to 6
Town began the second half with another defensive slip up to allow United to take the lead; which Town again pulled back in the middle of the half. A couple of minutes later, United were awarded a penalty - what for, I do not know. I think that it must have been a foul seen only but the ref and the United players who bayed at the ref like the Hounds of the Baskervilles all evening as soon as a Town player tackled a United man. A few minutes later, Callum took a tumble in the area. I don't believe that this was a penalty - but it was a good deal closer to a valid penalty than that actually awarded by the ref
So the injury to Cleggy ended an unhappy night for Town; but the players can only be praised for showing enormous spirit and commitment in their 4th game in 8 days
