REPORT FROM HORSHAM FC Unfortunately it is a very true report as we were totally out played for almost the entire game and had some stout defending and especially young Goalie Joe Taylor to thank for keeping us on level terms until the final 10 minutes. Although Joe looks extremely young , a few more games like this and he will age before our very eyes.

HORSHAM: Cade (82), Charman (90)
Home goalkeeper Joe Taylor stood between Eastbourne Town and a heavy defeat but Horsham ultimately came out on top in this decidedly one-sided affair at the Saffrons thanks to late goals from Jamie Cade and Gary Charman. It looked like being another of those nights for the Horsham faithful, as the Brentford Academy loanee made a number of fine saves to frustrate the visitors, but the Hornets wouldn't be denied and scored twice in the final ten minutes to make it a league double against the division's basement side.
The match had originally been scheduled to take place before Christmas but was postponed at the start of the prolonged spell of winter weather and Charman might have been left cursing his misfortune as this rearranged meeting left him without the services of Junior Kaffo, Billy-Joe King and Ryan Woodford although the return of Bruno Pacheco and Ashley Robinson added energy and guile to the attack while Eastbourne were bemoaning the absence of the suspended Billy Medlock, denying the striker an appearance against his former club.
It was clear from the start that Horsham felt their best chance of success would come down the flanks and Tony Nwachukwu was up for the challenge, beating the full-back after just a couple of minutes and sending in a cross was was sliced horribly by Pacheco at the far post. Five minutes later Cade received a pass from Lewis Hamilton and turned his marker on the edge of the box, hitting a shot that deflected off Tom Gilbert and over the 'keeper but narrowly wide of the goal. Defensively, though, Horsham initially struggled to contain the direct running of Greg Berry as first Hamilton and then Jahmahl King were cautioned for bringing the striker down in full flow.
Pacheco battled to retrieve what looked like a lost cause and crossed into the box, only for Nwachukwu to have the ball whipped off his toes as he shaped to convert Byron Napper's lay-off. Ryan Marriott, playing in an unfamiliar full-back role, then picked out Ashley Robinson whose effort was pushed aside by Taylor before clipping an inviting cross that Nwachukwu volleyed straight at the goalkeeper, producing a distinctive reaction save, and Taylor probably deserved his good fortune when Pacheco fizzed the loose ball a fraction over the angle of post and crossbar.
Pacheco was next to test Taylor, with a snapshot from range, but Napper was unable to contort his body sufficiently enough to get power onto a header after King had headed Pachecho's free-kick back into the middle as the pressure continued to mount on the Eastbourne goal. Hamilton was hitting a string of superb crossfield passes to Nwachukwu and, from one such move, Nwachukwu laid the ball back for Ross Morley whose first time chip beat Taylor but landed on top of the net in what was the final goalmouth action of the first half.

Horsham came out for the second half some four or five minutes before their hosts, no doubt with Charman demanding more of the same with the player-manager moving himself into the attack with Napper taking up a more defensive role next to King. And the half was only a minute old when the reshuffle almost paid dividends as Charman rose unmarked to steer a header wide of the target. Then came the first of two unsuccessful penalty appeals in quick succession, as the linesman incurred the wrath of the travelling faithful. A handball offence by Gilbert looked to have taken place just inside the Eastbourne penalty box but a free-kick was awarded a yard or two outside and when Robinson's shot came back off the defensive wall, Marriott's follow-up had to be touched over by Taylor.
The corner was palmed away by the increasingly overworked 'keeper but a wonderfully executed one-two between Nwachukwu and Pacheco enabled the former to pick out Charman whose first time volley was kept out brilliantly by Taylor. Town's Andy Hales was having a testing evening against the confident Nwachukwu and he would have been relieved when the officials saw nothing wrong as he handled the winger's attempted cross inside the penalty box, much to Nwachukwu's annoyance.
Eastbourne were being utterly outplayed, by a side who have had their own struggles in recent weeks, and some good determination from Nwachukwu was matched by his manager who got on the end of another dangerous cross only to have his shot blocked at the expense of a corner. The next Horsham attack saw Nwachukwu the recipient of a decent delivery this time but he couldn't quite get the ball under control inside a bobbling goalmouth and so Robinson's cross went to waste. Adam Davidson then almost put through his own net when a Cade cross caused panic in the Eastbourne defence, Taylor coming to his team-mate's rescue by clawing the ball away from the top corner at full stretch.
Pacheco was withdrawn from the action with fifteen minutes remaining, in favour of Scott Harris, and the switch proved to be seamless as the visitors continued to take the game to their hosts with Robinson cutting inside and blasting a low shot just past the near post. A booking for Layton Schaaf gave the Hornets another set-piece and this looked to be one straight off the training ground as Robinson picked out Cade at the near post but Taylor was there once again, remarkably managing to hold on to the striker's close range volley and Hamilton swept another cross from Robinson over the top as the game looked ominously like ending in a frustrating stalemate.
But the deadlock was finally broken, eight minutes from time, when another diagonal 'Hollywood' pass from Marriott was taken superbly by Robinson and his inch-perfect cross went beyond the defender, picking out Cade who controlled and shot in the blink of an eye to send the ball into the roof of the net for a richly deserved opening goal. Eastbourne had nothing to offer in reply and Horsham put the result beyond doubt a minute from time when Napper mopped up in defence before sending a delightful pass down the right for Nwachukwu to take in his stride and hit in low to the six yard box where Charman prodded home.
Still the one-way traffic continued and Nwachukwu left two defenders on the floor in a typically jinking run into the box, marred only by the final shot that was only a foot too high, before Robinson and Cade combined in exciting style for the former Crystal Palace man to clip an audacious chip on to the roof of the goal.
