Report from the Faversham Town web-site
Two goals inside the final six minutes kept Faversham’s Ryman South play-off hopes alive. The Lilywhites looked on their way to a comfortable victory early on. Luke Harvey smashed home an Aaron Lacy corner at the second attempt after Referee Mr Daniel Bonneywell had ordered a retake of the initial corner, which Harvey had also scored from. However, the home team were pegged back on the stroke of half-time. Jamie Crone shot underneath Faversham keeper Simon Overland to make the hosts pay for the chances they had missed. Eastbourne were fortunate to be level, although after the restart, it looked like both sides would cancel one another out. This was until Darren Marsden shot past away goalkeeper James Broadbent, while Renford Tenyue sealed the win late on with a chip.
The hosts began like a house on fire. Harvey was influential in the first chances of the contest. Firstly, the former Herne Bay Captain hooked a Lacy cross goal wards, only for Broadbent to make an excellent close-range block on 3 minutes. Seven minutes later, a trademark Lacy long throw went through to Brendon Cass at the far post. The 30-year-old looked like he had broken the deadlock until Tom Howard-Bold got back to clear off the line and out for a corner. From the corner, Harvey glanced in at the near-post. The goal was disallowed, as the corner had been taken from outside the corner quadrat. But, the retaking of the corner simply allowed Harvey to open the scoring in classier fashion. The corner fell to the 27-year-old, whose half-volley nearly ripped the net, as it flew into the top left-hand corner.
The Lilywhites continued to dominate and Ashley Brown almost bagged a rare goal on the 14th minute. The right-back beat the Eastbourne goalkeeper to a beautiful Dan King cross, though, a visiting defender got back to hook the ball off the line. Seconds later, King was involved again. This time he fed through Cass, who was denied by a good save from Broadbent. Just before the half hour mark, a David Botterill cross fell to Marsden. The ex-Folkestone midfielder's effort fell inches wide of the goal, before he also went close twice more before the half-time interval. However, before the break, the away side somehow managed to equalise. The impressive Crone beat left-back King and his tame strike, which was just the visitor’s second attempt of the game, founds its way into the far corner.
Eastbourne didn't really deserve to be level at the break but they looked a much better outfit after the goal. Though, it was Faversham that continued to- almost exclusively- create the opportunities. Cass forced another block from Broadbent on 57 minutes and Botterill's deflected effort a minute later fell narrowly wide. The only opening the Bourne created in the second period fell to Billy Medlock, who was thwarted by Overland as the keeper charged out on the hour mark.
The Lilywhites again went close on the 80th minute when an away defender cleared substitute Danny Hockton's shot off the line. But, the hosts finally retook the lead four minutes later with Marsden running onto a fantastic cross field pass from Botterill to fire past Broadbent. In the final seconds of normal time, Adam Davidson left a Faversham high ball to go through to his goalkeeper. However, the defender hadn't spotted substitute Tenyue. The former Canterbury City forward beat Broadbent to the loose ball and chipped into the bottom corner. Cue acrobatic celebrations.
