REPORT FROM FOLKESTONE INVICTA WEB-SITE
Yo-Ho-Ho and another three points in the play-off pot
Johan Ter Horst fired Invicta to a 3-2 win over hosts Eastbourne Town with a stunning 79th minute strike at The Saffrons on Wednesday.
But this was a game where victory looked like eluding Neil Cugley’s side until that moment and they still havd to endure a nervous closing 10 minutes before the three points were safely in the bag.
No matter where they stand in the table, the Town have always proved difficult opponents, but Folkestone began at a great pace with Paul Booth, particularly, looking eager to get the game won inside the first 20 minutes or so - in similar fashion to the win over far more formidable Faversham at the weekend.
But it was the home side who went in front when an opportunist strike by Layton Schaaf crept inside the post with keeper Tim Roberts seemingly unsighted on just eight minutes.
That lead last only three minutes however as Booth cut in from the right and shot from an almost impossible angle to beat keeper James Broadbent with fullback Ryan Cooper only able to help the ball into the back of the next for the equaliser.
Things were going to plan for the visitors when Booth was chopped down in the box midway through the first period and picked himself up to slam the ball past Broadbent giving Folkestone the lead that their possession deserved.
The ‘Bourne came more into the game after that but it needed an unfortunate own goal from Nat Blanks following a misunderstanding with his goalkeeper to get them back on terms in the closing moments of the first half.
The second 45 minutes was beginning to look like ending in frustration as Ter Horst went close a couple of times and luck seemed to have deserted Invicta.
But 11 minutes from the end of normal time in a match of many stoppages, Ter Horst picked the ball up on the right and cut inside before firing a fierce cross-shot that the goalkeeper got a big hand to but was never going to keep out.
The excellent Booth - such an inspiration to everyone involved with Folkestone Invicta this season- limped off in the dying moments, but manager Cugley dismissed the problem as cramp and no reason to suspect that the veteran will miss Saturday’s trip to Tooting & Mitcham.
Folkestone Invicta: Roberts; Vincent, Chappell, Friend, Blanks; Stevenson (Austin), J Everitt, M Everitt, Newman (Yianni); Booth (Edge), Ter Horst
