Liam Collins Salvages A Point
by Kane Brooker
Super-sub Liam Collins salvaged us a point in the league fixture on a cold and windy afternoon, that also saw the match temporarily halted.
Travelling Eastbourne, sitting at the bottom of the table, got off to the dream start, as Rocky Baptiste tapped home following a goal-mouth scramble, created from a simple corner. Our defence had a shaky start, but soon improved rapidly following the early goal. Scott Day helped us bounce back with a reply five minutes later, a brilliant shot swerved into the corner out of the reach of Town goalkeeper Sam Johnson-Freeman.
With little else occurring in the first half, play evenly spread and little chances given out for either side, we went into the break knowing the result could go either way, and our game needed to improve quickly.
As the second half started, we looked much more positive, Max Fitzgerald and Simon Huckle looking strong. Nevertheless, it only took 9 minutes for Eastbourne to break past our defence and take the lead. Left back and captain Ross Sutton drilled the ball across the box, missed by both attackers waiting, only for Miles Mitchell to connect and knock the ball into his own net – a very unfortunate debut.
Eastbourne looked strong on the ball, dominant with play and stopped Connor French regularly, who received little help when he did progress up to the opposing box. The introduction of Darryl Siaw and Liam Collins certainly made a difference, as we stepped up and tried to find that equalizer.
Liam Collins then decided to work his magic, making his way into the box with some magical skill, cleverly chopping the ball through the legs of the opponent, leaving them stood dazzled, only to take a simple touch and knock the ball around the keeper to give us hope.
Immediately after the second goal, power went down, and lights went out. With half of the floodlights having lost power five minutes before Collins’ goal, the remaining lights switched off, meaning the referee had to temporarily halt the game.
As Mark Hams gave our boys a quick talking to on the pitch, the referee pondered on whether to allow the game to continue or be abandoned with just ten minutes remaining, decided to carry on. So with the remaining period of the game played in some darkness, we tried hard to use this to our advantage.
Connor French almost grabbed us the winner in the dying embers of the game, Lee Hall’s cross finding the head of French, who could only manage to find the post with his header.
It was a game we should have taken all three points from, but with Eastbourne stepping up their performances, we have taken what we deserved from the game.
