Having dropped 8 points out of the last possible 9 is there any chance that we may see any of our reserves playing on Saturday? There are only 7 games to go and any chance of finishing in a play-off position is fast receding. It would now seem that this is the perfect time to give any player that the reserve team manager thinks could step up to a higher standard a chance. If there isn't anybody what is the object of the reserve team?

I would agree that there seems no real link between the first team and the reserves, with the reserves operating independently of the first team. I suspect that most of the reserve team like playing for a settled side and don't want to be sitting on the bench with the first team when they could be playing a match. After all, at this level it is about enjoyment rather than making a living. In the days before several substitutes no doubt reserves would have to have been used in the first team.
There are obvious differences between the two sides. The reserves play many fewer matches than the first team - 23 so far this season compared with 43 for the the first team. As far as I am aware the reserves field a fairly settled side without many changes in personnel. The first team, on the other hand, has had no fewer than 39 players appear for them this season. I understand that at this level of football there is constant switching between clubs but I can't help thinking that it would be better to play a more settled side if possible.
To respond to oap's questions. I am not sure that any of the reserves are currently up to first team standard. The function of the reserves? As far as the first team is concerned it must be to act as a stepping stone to the first team for very young players who look as if they will be good enough to make that jump in standard to the first team.
I'm looking forward to Saturday's game, with the hope that it will be better than the match last Saturday!

The main purpose of the reserve team is to give players the opportunity to develop and play adult football at a fair standard .Better players will develop at different stages in there development and some players do get into the first team squad , joe summerbell , max Hollebone , dan rodgers are all players that have progressed .The reserves also serve a purpose in the fact that players develop at different stages, some progress to county league teams ,others hopefully raise their game to get themselves into the first team squad . After al we have always been a club about trying to develop home grown talent ,sometimes it works , sometimes it doesnt , but im sure we will be a club that continues to offer the youth of our youth system a summit to aim for wether it be reserve or preferably first team level .
