So Mr Bloor believes he has pulled off a major coup by signing Ben Austin. Ben has undoubtedly been an excellent player, but is now at the end of his career. How much football will Town get out of him ? A season if they are lucky. And how many games will he start and finish ? If Mr Bloor was going to sign a player from Eastbourne Borough, it is a shame it could not be Ross Treleavan. Now that WOULD have been a scoop !
Of further concern is that the level of commitment Ben can now provide is less than that required at Eastbourne Borough, but it is sufficient for Eastbourne Town. Although on different levels, both are semi PROFESSIONAL clubs. If you are going to pay a player for his services then he should provide the same level of commitment whether it is in the County League or the Conference South, or any level of senior football. If a player does not want to commit, but just wants a game, then there is always parks football or the Sunday leagues. We have seen before how ex Borough players see Town as a soft option to wind down. Remember Stuart Tuck, Mr Bloor's very first signing ? That didn't last very long, so we shall see...
I am not privy to Mr Bloor's budget, but I would be happier if he spent it bringing in younger players with their best years ahead of them.

I think that Jontee is being unnecessarily harsh. Football history is full of players dropping down divisions as they become older. Some of them don't work out well but others are a great success, with good attitude and professionalism rubbing off on younger players. It is hard to predict whether Ben Austin's signing will serve Town well but I am optimistic.
I am sorry to see that Kieran Thorp has gone (to Lewes). Kieran has kept goal superbly for Town and I wish him well. I see that Town have signed Sam Reed as Kieran's replacement. I haven't seen Sam play but if he uses his 6'5'' height well for crosses I would hope that he will be a real asset to the team.
Roll on the new season!

Yes, Grimrich, sorry to see Thorpy go. He was the club's saviour last season and richly deserved the player of the year. But it looks like we have a good replacement in Sam Reed, from what we know. Height is always psycologically good for a footballer, particularly a goalkeeper. Well done there Mr Bloor. Credit where it is due !
Good though Thorpy is, his lack of height often made it difficult to control his area. a good shot stopper, but that was his weak point. Hopefully, with Sam's extra height that will improve.

whilst i understand your concerns jontee , i remember well when ben played for us before , he came up through the youth ranks and played to the top of his ability ,he then moved forward and played for borough at a higher level and we never stood in his way , he appreciated that and always said he would one day come back and play at the saffrons when the time was right ,obviously that time is now and we welcome ben and young sam to the team , i can also announce that danny has signed matty crabb as well ,another youth team player that has come back to the saffrons ,if the team can gel with the new players intergrating into the team ,i can see us having a good season i hope .

jontee is always sensitive about people having a go at him but it is just his negative remarks that wind people up. Especially towards the manager. Like YP says Ben was formerly with Town before going to Borough and I think that he and Crabby are excellant signings. It will also help in strengthening the squad in other area's if others players we are after can see the experience we have signed. As far as I am concerned this is a staement that the club is after at least a play off place this season. Sam Read is an excellant keeper and has played for us before I think reserves and first team before going to the states. The manager is not here to be everybodies mate or give games to the fans favourites or the youth teams star players. He is surely here to make town into a successful side at Ryman level. He took over in difficult circumstances and there is no doubt the club has progressed in the last two seasons. With the signings made I can see that further progress will be made this season. If not then I am sure he will feel the pressure - and not just from jontee

Well, Kentownie, I must say that I am not particularly sensitive, having long since grown several extra skins. I do however take the trouble to reply when people are kind enough to respond to my posts. I think if they feel wound up by my comments, then they are probably the more sensitive ones.
As for negative remarks, well, as I have said before, one man's realism is another man's negativity, and I accept that just as I respect other people's opinions on this site, whether on not they agree with mine.
It is well known on here that I am not a fan of Mr Bloor, and fail to see how he has advanced the playing side since he arrived, despite having a larger budget and squad than his predecessor. Even then, I always give credit where due, as you can see above.
Back to realism now, and I am afraid that cloud cuckoo land has arrived with speculation over the play-off places. A large number of quality signings would be required before that could come about. Town can look good going forward, but lacka good centre forward. Defensively, they are still in the County League, with top priority a big quality centre half, and fullbacks.

and fail to see how he has advanced the playing side since he arrived I thought 14th was the highest position that we had attained - is that not progress??? Its a bit like saying that Chelsea only finished 6th in the premiership this season and under RDM they had not advanced the playing side. If Town finish top 10 this season and Mr Bloor gets the sack through another season of "lack of progress" I would look no further than give Jontee the job

Kentownie, I think you will find that Ady Colwell got Town to a similar position, or maybe a little higher ? 12th rings a bell. And he had a minimal budget by comparison. So where is the progress ? Fair point ?
It is very kind of you to put me forward for the Town job, but not sure I will be available. I am still reeling from the shock of not being approached for the England job, but now feel the Irish job could become vacant !

What was that Cilla Black programme? Oh yes, Surprise, Surprise!! Jontee, mentioning the ringing of bells in relation to progress.....do you remember Eastbourne Town getting humiliated by Horsham YMCA by 9 goals to nil......I think beating Bognor Regis and losing to a Gargan header against Whitehawk could, for most Town supporters, but not Jontee, of course, be labelled progress....and, in my opinion, it would be the correct description of Town under the Bloor regime. Progress year on year as Derren Howard suggested in the Herald. With the signings of Ben Austin and Matt Crabb, all Town supporters would be upbeat and awaiting the new season with relish.......but not Cilla's mate......the two LOCAL lads that have plied their trade at THE highest levels of non-league football for years and years......aren't seen as good signings by Mr Bloor, our very good manager, but, as has beens that aren't good enough for Town.... or else they are just at the Saffronms for the ride!!! What twaddle.....if someone called for a TAXI, I fancy it wouldn't be for those two!!! As to the supposed levels of budgets.... Adie Colwell had more than Jontee knows for sure, and relatively well he did. Danny Bloor doesn't have much more but look at the quality of player we have now.....I bet its never been better.....and hasn't Mr Bloor done well with attracting good players? So, to my last bit......we all know Jontee is probably related to Mr Colwell so he will be delighted to read, as I was, that Adie Colwell has agreed to join Danny Bloor's coaching staff for next season...... Well done Adie, welcome back....well done Danny Bloor.....great man management with Adie.... and great signngs .....and Jontee, have you seen that taxi??

Yes I do remember the 9-0 Horsham YM score, a freak result which precipitated Mr Colwell's departure. I also remember that Mr Bloor, having changed the side out of all recognition, then took town right to bottom place, and but for the demise of Merthyr Tydfil the club would have been relegated.
We are not privy to the club's finances, but it was well known that ground improvements on entry to the Ryman league left little for players, and Town could not compete with County league clubs. Against this background, Mr Colwell kept them in the Ryman, and then achieved a mid table place. Before his last half season, sponsorship was withdrawn, making it even more difficult for Mr Colwell. Mr Bloor always seems to have had money to spend, and the more so since the new sponsorship deal.
Certainly surprised by Mr Colwell's return in this role. He was manager for 5 years and comes back as backroom staff ! Who would return to fill shelves in a shop where once they were the manager ? Even stranger because these two guys have very different styles of play. Certainly I would have loved to see Mr Colwell back at the Saffrons, but not in this way.
And yes I am keeping my eye open for the taxi ! A lorra lorra love !
